IN ADDITION TO receiving a fine thrashing from a mob after he was allegedly caught breaking into a shop, Andrew Stewart was also remanded in custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Stewart, who is charged with shop breaking and larceny, pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle.
Allegations before the court are that Stewart reportedly broke into a shop belonging to Sung Xiang Di and was seen by the security guard while leaving. The security guard, along with residents, reportedly chased and held him with some of the stolen items in a T-shirt he was wearing. He was beaten and handed over to the police.
Stewart, who appeared shaken in court, denied ever being in the area and accused the residents of abusing him. He was remanded in custody until October 5, when his trial will begin.
