Buju's fans disrupt traffic on way to court

SUPPORTERS OF MARK 'Buju Banton' Myrie disrupted traffic along Maxfield Avenue, St. Andrew, yesterday after they surrounded the DJ as he made his way from the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court where his $50,000 bail was extended .

Charged with assault

Myrie is charged, along with Horace Hill, for assault in connection with an incident on June 24, last year during which it is alleged that a group of men was beaten after they were accused of being homosexuals. He was arrested and charged last week on a warrant and taken before the Night Court where he was granted bail.

When the matter came up for mention yesterday before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, both Myrie and Hill had their bail extended.

As a condition of his bail Myrie will now visit the Constant Spring Police Station once per week. In addition, the complainant who had been testifying when the case was last mentioned on September 21 was bound over to return on October 19 when the trial is expected to continue.

When the DJ emerged from the court building the mood of his supporters became festive. One man hoisted a female unto his waist as they danced and cheered while several others waved anti-homosexual banners. As Myrie emerged from the courtyard, his supporters met him in the middle of the road halting traffic on the busy road. The road was eventually cleared as Buju and his entourage left.

Allegations against Myrie and Hill are that they barged into a house on Carlisle Avenue in the Kingston 8 area and allegedly beat six men.

But, during his testimony last week, one of the complainants admitted that he had opened the gate for the men and no one had grabbed the key from him as was said previously.
