IT SEEMS THE heavy rains that Tropical Storm Wilma doused on the island, was a sort of security measure the country has been waiting for.
In a STAR round-up of the island yesterday afternoon, most areas had positive news in terms of crime to report.
In Portmore, the Bridgeport and Greater Portmore Police said they had received no reports of any serious crimes in their respective areas for the past 24 hours.
"Nothing here, just water rising in the gullies," said an officer from the Bridgeport Police Station.
However, in Harbour View, the police say though they received no reports of any major crimes, yesterday morning some persons had blocked the roads, attempting to extort motorists. The police however say they arrived in time to put an end to it.
In rural areas, such as Highgate, St. Mary, Lucea, Hanover and St. James, all was calm, as the police said they had received no serious reports of any crimes in their areas.
A few sporadic shootings, however, occurred in the Corporate Area. According to the Kingston Eastern Police, about 4:53 p.m. shots were fired in the Rockfort Area, along Barnes Road, Commission Road and Glasspole Avenue.
In the Kingston Western Division, a war between two gangs in Jones Town claimed the life of one man, while another was shot and injured along Nine Street and Love Lane.
In other areas of the Corporate Area, such as Half-Way Tree, August Town, Constant Spring and Cross Roads, the police say except for Wilma's passing, all was calm.
