What's the catch, G8?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

It is being heralded around the planet that Africa, is earmarked to benefit from a US$40 billion debt write-off by the G8 countries as a means of stemming poverty on the African Continent.

Ha, Ha, Ha what a big laugh. The G8 countries are acting as if they ever gave away anything for nothing. I can bet my granny's last dollar there is a catch which will see the African countries giving up something valuable in exchange for this debt write off.

My questions for the G8 member countries are:

1. Will the Africans have to allow your fast food chains to be set up all across the continent?

2. Won't it be a situation in which the African people will have to allow you to control the mining of their minerals - from gold, diamond to oil etc.?

3. Aren't you going to control Africa's lumber harvesting and their wild meat reaping?

4. Wouldn't you say you are forgiving Africa's $40 billion debt in order to make trillions of dollars?

5. Isn't it fair to say you folks consider African people as 'children of a lesser God'?

Here is a saying for you G8 members: "a man may have authority over others but he doesn't have their heart, less they have his own".

I am, etc.,

ALLAN MARTIN
