Man pleads not guilty to stealing spoons

A MAN ACCUSED of stealing 220 soup spoons from a hotel recently, pleaded not guilty when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Jimmy Newland, the accused man, allegedly stole the soup spoons from the Medallion Hall Hotel at 53 Hope Road, Kingston 6, where he worked as security guard.

Allegations are that on October 23 at 9:05 p.m., the hotel's manager was doing a routine check of the kitchen when he saw Newland throwing some metal items through the grill which lead from the kitchen to outside the hotel.

Newland was approached and he assured the manager that everything was fine. Later that night the manager went to the same spot and saw Newland throw something away as he saw him.

The manager approached him and asked him what he was doing, Newland denied doing anything wrong but after the manager insisted on finding out what he was doing, he confessed that he was stealing spoons and claimed he had done so because his house recently burnt down.

The accused allegedly stole 22 soup spoons valued at $2,640. The matter is to be tried in the night court on November 16.
