DRAWING ON THE recent spate of unrest in sections of the Corporate Area, President of the Trelawny Chamber of Commerce, Dennis Seivwright, says Government should move towards harsher penalties to rid the country of criminals, who are holding the country at ransom.
"I don't know why they're (the Government) bobbing and weaving about hanging. We should just get rid of all who are on death row right now and quickly do the same for those who come after," he said. "In fact, I think we should change now to even have execution in public over the next three years and you will see the difference."
100 MURDERS
Mr. Seivwright's comments were fuelled by Monday's violent protests in Spanish Town following Sunday's fatal shooting of Donovan 'Bulbie" Bennett, 43, reputed leader of the 'Clansman' gang. Bennett, who police say was wanted in connection with 80-100 murders over the past two years, was cut down in Clarendon during an alleged shoot-out with the lawmen.
"This kind of behaviour is threatening to destroy all of us and our very survival," declared the outspoken chamber president. "Spanish Town is now like a grave monster ... I didn't know these guys had so much control over the place."
He added that 'dons' and their activities have been allowed to fester as a result of the drug trade, which has left them almost indomitable.
"Full time the politicians learn how devastating criminals can get and we now need to leave the police force alone to clean up the place at all cost!" he warned.
He added that in his home parish Trelawny, which has had an increase in homicides, particularly because of a gang feud in the town of Falmouth, the police have things under control.
