THE RIO MAGNO river has been a source of problems for residents in rural St. Catherine for some time now. However, for some residents their problems with the river may soon be over as the parish council moves to correct this.
In July, the Dover Castle main road in Guy's Hil was split in two after heavy rains destroyed a section of the roadway and washed away pieces of a property nearby.
The St. Catherine Parish Council started to work on the road and has so far completed most of the repairs. The heavy rains associated with Hurricane Wilma have not affected the work.
"I have not been out there personally, but I am told that it has stood up well and that's good," Douglas Moodie, parish manager at the St. Catherine Parish Council told THE STAR.
He said the roadway had been restored enough to allow vehicles to pass, however, the roadway needs to be barber green for the work to be completed.
In the meantime, residents of McKinley Drive in Sunny Side, Linstead may have more problems with the river. They have called upon the authorities to do something about it as it frequently floods their homes when it rains heavily.
Following rains of Hurricane Dennis, residents complained that the river had increased its size and was slowly eroding their backyards and posing a threat to their lives.
However, Moodie said he had not received any complaints about that section of the river and could not speak of any plans to provide help for the residents there. He said, however, if the residents reported their concerns the council is willing to look into their problems and see if they can addressed.
