FORMER CHAMPIONS WATERFORD Primary lead Zone A of the INSPORTS St. Catherine Primary and Junior High Football League on goal difference after carving out a 2-0 win over Independence City Primary last Thursday at Racing playing field in Gregory Park.
Waterford is joined on three points by Port Henderson who brushed aside Gregory Park 3-2 and Portsmouth who clipped newcomers Belmont 2-1.
In other games, Old Harbour Bay swamped new entrants McCooks Pen 11-0 in Zone C while Marlie Mount beat Crescent 3-1. In a Junior High Under-15 game, Rosemount crushed Point Hill 6-0, propelled by five goals by Gordon Richards.
The score in the Portsmouth/Belmont clash did not reflect the dominance of the Portsmouth team. Portsmouth quickly rushed to a 2-0 lead through goals from Donald Hinds (7th) and Shanon Thomas (20th). However, Belmont gave a late fight near the end and were awarded a penalty in which Shamari Shaw buried the spot kick in the 38th minute of play.
Eleven Portmore schools are down to take part in this year's competition, which kicked off with a dress parade function and a triple header at the G.C. Foster College in St. Catherine. The event was attended by several well-known St. Catherine football personalities including Lincoln 'Happy' Suther land, president of the St. Catherine FA. Matches will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
