Model DJ Nicole Grey

Kavelle Anglin-Christie, Staff Reporter

Pulse Model Nichola Grey is struting her stuff in the music business.

NICOLE GREY'S DREAM wasn't always to become a model. In fact, she dreamt of becoming a rap star.

But she's sobered up since then and is on her way to becoming a DJ.

Nicole, who prefers to be called Nikki, started modelling professionally after she was discovered in the Pulse Model Search three years ago.

A year later, she went to Perfect Model Management in London. However, the agency went bankrupt and she is now working with Model Plan in London, Pulse in Jamaica, MC (squared) in New York, L.A. and Miami.

"It's fun because I love what I do, but 99.9 % of it is castings and it's really warm in the islands, but it's really cold over there, and you have to be walking in the cold all day, plus you have to put a lot of hard work into it," she said about modelling.

TOP ACHIEVEMENTS

She ranks some of her top achievements as being signed to the agencies she now works with, appearing on the cover of SHE Caribbean several times and being able to strut the runway daily.

"Right now I am on hold for MAC Cosmetics campaign and I'm sweating it. I hope I get it because it would take my career to another level. There are a lot of options that I'm sweating right now," she said.

Though her modelling career has been snowballing, her enthusiasm for music has not lessened. "Growing up, everyone was like, 'lose the rapping you need to DJ' and I did," she says.

When asked about what she thinks others will think of her decision to pursue music, she said, "I think they will like it and modelling and music will work for each other. Right now, there is no model/DJ in Jamaica, and when I come out to perform they will expect me to be all nice and cute. But I am not just a cutie, I can be hard core and raw chaw too," she said laughing.

No one with a truly curious mind could resist asking her to prove her skills. "No, I don't think so," she said.

SKILLS

After some prompting: "Fine, okay. I'll just do a little piece, about two lines."

It was almost too good to be true: she has skills. She did a couple lines of a song Bad Girl she recently recorded.

Since then, she has also recorded a song with Idonia, Lala, and a number of other artistes. Grey, however says she would love the opportunity to work with Tanya Stevens.

"I saw her the other day, and I was like you are the only female artiste whose CD I will go into a store and pick up. I would just love to work with her," she said. "But for now, I've been voicing in the studio and learning how to juggle music and modelling."
