A DRAMATIC SHOOT-OUT took place on Monday night, involving two gunmen and a licensed firearm holder, near a service station at the intersection of South Avenue and Lyndhurst Road on Monday night.
Reports are that at about 7:20 p.m., a licensed firearm holder was driving his white Toyota Camry vehicle along South Avenue, when upon reaching the intersection, a parked jeep blocked his path. He reportedly manoeuvred around the vehicle, when another black motor car sped up and hit the back of the parked jeep.
Two men, armed with handguns, immediately sprang from the black car and started firing wildly. The licensed firearm holder challenged the men, firing 10 rounds through his own windscreen, in the direction of the men.
In the ensuing gun battle, a passing taxi driver was shot in the jaw. The licensed firearm holder was also shot and injured in his chest, at which point the gunmen returned to their vehicle and fled the scene.
Both injured men were taken to hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Eight 9mm spent shells were found on the scene and five more were found in the Camry motor car.
Police have not yet established a motive for the incident. "The circumstances are suspicious, but have not yet confirmed that the motive was robbery," said a policeman from the Half-Way Tree CIB.
