A BRITISH WOMAN before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on ganja charges was denied bail on Tuesday despite her claims that she is married to a Jamaican citizen living in Westmoreland.
Leona Lecointe, 29, a hairdresser, pleaded not guilty to possession, dealing and taking steps to export ganja.
Defence attorney, Dalton Reid, in his application for bail told RM Winsome Henry that his client was married to a Jamaican and had a family friend who could stand surety.
When the family friend came to court, he told the RM Henry that he knew Lecointe's mother and could guarantee that she would not abscond if granted bail.
However, RM Henry said she would rather speak with Lecointe's husband before she can consider bail.
The allegations are that Lecointe went to the Sangster International Airport and was in line to board a Britannia flight to England. She was taken from the line and her suitcase was searched in her presence. Two packages containing vegetable matter resembling ganja and weighing 16 pounds were found.
Lecointe will return to court on December 13.
