ONE OF TWO men caught by narcotics police with more than 200 pounds of ganja, was fined in Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.
He is Andrew Hudson, 25, a boat captain of Bushy Park, St. Catherine. His co-accused, Donald Hamilton, 40, a labourer from Clarendon, had his bail extended until January 27, 2006.
Detective Corporal Lloyd Richards of the Narcotics Division outlined to the court that on August 8,a joint police/military operation was conducted at the Bushy Park beach about noon.
Upon the lawmen's approach, several men ran from a hut. Hudson was held and 113 kilograms of ganja in several bags were found. The police also found an identification card belonging to Hamilton.
Hudson was charged with possession, dealing, conspiracy and attempting to export ganja. The conspiracy and attempt charges were dropped by the crown, however, he was fined $15,000 or six months for possession and $26,000 or six months for dealing. The sentences will run concurrently if the fines are not paid.
Hamilton told the court that he is not guilty and that he had lent someone a bag and did not know that his identification was in the bag. Having heard his explanation, RM Lorna Errar Gayle, reduced his $150,000 bail offer to $50,000 on his own surety for him to return to court next January. They were not represented when they appeared in court. a
