DEAR PASTOR,
I love reading your articles. I've wanted to write you for some time now. I pray that you may have some answers for me. My problem is that I have been with my husband for almost 16 years. I am an American citizen. My husband is a citizen of Jamaica, but was a resident of Canada living and working there.
The problem began when a few of his friends told him that they knew a way for him to make more money than what he is earning from his job. He would have enough to take care of his family here and in Jamaica. Listening to the wrong advice led him to quit his job and illegally move to the United States of America. Then he got caught up in the drug game. He served 5 years in prison and was deported to Jamaica from America.
MARRIED
I recently went to Jamaica and we were married there. We have six children between us. I work and take care of all of us by myself and it's very tough. I know that he made a stupid mistake and so does he. He is a good person and a good father. It has been 3 years since our children have seen him in person. This whole ordeal has hurt our family so much. I can not afford to take my whole family to Jamaica. It's like I'm being punished extra; more so than he.
My question to you is, how long must a deportee stay in Jamaica before applying to come to another country? My husband has good standings in Canada. It would be a lot easier for me to drive to Canada than trying to come up with enough money for all of us to come to Jamaica.
Thank you
R.H., Florida, USA
Dear R.H.,
May I suggest that you work through an immigration lawyer. He/she would be able to advice you appropriately. I am really sorry to know that your husband broke the law and was subsequently deported. I trust that the Lord will continue to sustain the children and you.
