THE LEAD STORY in yesterday's Gleaner spoke about the death of six persons in an accident along the Gutters main road in St. Elizabeth on Saturday.
The accident occurred after the truck in which they were travelling overturned. Two of the eight persons who were on the truck, are still in hospital suffering from injuries they received in the accident.
According to Sergeant Ian Lawrence of the Santa Cruz Police Traffic Department, the truck appeared to be overloaded and could have been carrying about three times its weight.
It is quite sad that it is usually at Christmas, the time of great celebration and happiness, that some of the most tragic accidents occur. It is also strange that all of these tragic accidents occur because of careless actions.
In December last year, at least three accidents occurred where six people were killed because the vehicles they were in were overloaded.
Yet, this year when the traffic police are reporting fewer fatalities than last year, another six have died, possibly, because the vehicle was overloaded, this time with lumber.
Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, passengers and all road users need to realise that they need to be more careful when using the roads.
We already have gunmen killing our citizens at a rapid rate. We do not need careless motorists, killing themselves and others in the season.
Safety is not difficult, all that is required is for everyone to obey the road code. By following these simple rules, you could save your life or someone else's.
