Leftside and Esco
IT WAS THE musical sojourn of their parents that brought Leftside and Esco together.
Leftside's father, Lloyd Parks, used to play in the Lloyd Parks and We The People Band for Esco's step-mother, Marcia Griffiths. It was through this relationship that Leftside and Esco became friends.
"We were mutual friends as children and we would meet up on tours. His father used to play bands for my step-mother," said Esco.
With the childhood bond in place, the two also bonded musically as adults. With a sound knowledge of the sound system, Leftside and Esco were able to work together.
"It did start from sound days. I used to play on a sound called Syndicate and Esco had a sound called Dutty Dozens. There was a party that Syndicate was playing at and our original mic man wasn't there. So I asked Esco to fill in because he was the mic man for his sound," said Leftside.
Not only did Esco fill in, but he also used his sound system skills and "mic man" talent to liven up the party. "It went better than usual. The man in charge of Syndicate said he was very impressed," said Leftside.
Esco's 'fill in' marked the beginning of their musical relationship. As it turned out Leftside and Esco were more alike than they thought.
"The interest was the same, like getting dub plates and things like that. That brought us to our musical side more. We did dubs more, using our voices and even collaborating with artistes like Bounty, Marshall, Ele (Elephant Man), Alozade and Kid Kurrupt," said Esco.
Having similar interests, work was made much easier. The more they worked together, the broader their musical scope grew. "We used to build rhythms for Kings of Kings, Stone Love, Q45, Jammys and we did collaborations with Don Corleone. Round dem time deh (the year 2000), me and Esco used to record we likkle song dem and people used to love it," said Leftside.
As a duo, their chemistry makes them very successful. This is evident in their songs Tuk Een Yuh Belly, Dr. Evil, Last Night and No STD's, to name a few.
Leftside and Esco operate as one unit and they complement each other, both in song and in performance.
