TELEVISION JAMAICA'S Schools' Challenge Quiz competition will undergo several important changes that will benefit Jamaican children, families and schools, TVJ's General Manager, Kay Osborne, has announced.
One such change is that the competition will end by March 31, each year, to ensure that students who participate in the competition have sufficient time to prepare for CXC and CAPE regional examinations that are administered in May and June. In past years, TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz would normally begin in January, and end in April or May. The announcement was made during the 2006 Schools' Challenge Quiz launch at TVJ's Lyndhurst Road studios.
REVIEW AND REVISION
Osborne announced that TVJ had undertaken a comprehensive review and revision of the quiz rules and had produced a new Rules Manual that is effective beginning with the 2006 season. The manual will be provided to each of the 78 schools that have entered the 2006 competition.
One important change is the establishment of a five-person Appeals Panel to resolve major issues. The panel's chairperson is Mrs. Yvonne Anderson, RJR Communications Group's human resource manager. Two Schools' Challenge Quiz judges, a competition coaches' repre-sentative and a representative of the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools are the remaining panel members.
Ms. Osborne said beginning with the 2006 season, Schools' Challenge Quiz will be broadcast on TVJ for 13 weeks, which is a typical television programme season. To facilitate this new schedule, the competition will be broadcast two additional days each week. Broadcast will now be six days per week, Mondays to Fridays at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m.
In her remarks, Ms. Osborne paid tribute to the late Mrs. Hope Stewart, who conceptualised the Schools' Challenge Quiz competition. Ms. Osborne said Mrs. Stewart's idea had benefited Jamaican children, their families and the entire country.
The main sponsors for Schools' Challenge Quiz 2006 are Digicel, Trade Wind Citrus' Freshh brand and Lasco. Associate sponsors are Juici Patties and Kingston Bookshop. Schools' Challenge Quiz is the longest running, televised schools' competition in the English speaking Caribbean.
