ON MONDAY, THE STAR explored the story of a 14-year-old girl who was alleged to have been sexually molested by her brother and stepfather.
What makes this story even more disturbing is the fact that the child's 28-year-old mother was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact, after she was accused of telling the child to lie about who had impregnated her at age 12. Yes, age 12.
If these allegations are true, it leaves one to wonder what kind of mother would sit idly by and allow her child to be molested repeatedly. And, as if that was not bad enough, the child is said to have been encouraged to say that she became pregnant after she was raped by a masked man.
It gets even worse. After the child gave birth, she reportedly handed the baby over to a lawyer without any form of documentation. A baby, mark you, not a puppy, not a kitten, a breathing, human baby and according to police reports, there is no evidence that the baby has ever been visited. And even after all that, if the allegations are true, it is obvious that the accused persons have learnt nothing, as, of November of this year, the child was again assaulted, this time, allegedly by her stepfather.
Many persons fail to realise that parenting is a full-time job and not a hobby, and this, though some will never admit it, is the source of many of our problems in Jamaica.
