Man sentenced to 20 years for robbery

A MAN ACCUSED of robbing a grocery store at gunpoint in April 2004, was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison. Gregory Lumsden, 23, of a Lyssons, St. Thomas address, was sentenced on December 8 before Justice Courtney Day in the St. Thomas Circuit Court.

The facts of the case are that at about 9:15 p.m. on the day in question, the store owner was sitting in front of his businessplace when he was approached by two men, one armed with a knife and the other with a shot gun. The men held up the complainant and robbed him of over $35,000 in cash.

They then ransacked the store and stole several other items. It is also reported that they fired two shots in the air to disperse the crowd and ran into nearby bushes. The police were notified and after investigations, Lumsden was arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearm and robbery with aggravation.

For the illegal possession charge, he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment at hard labour and for robbery with aggravation, he will serve 12 years at hard labour.

He was also convicted for illegal possession of a firearm in the Clarendon Circuit Court and is to serve seven years on that charge. The sentences imposed in the St. Thomas court will run concurrently to the previous sentence. Lumsden had pleaded not guilty to the charges, but was found guilty when a no case submission was made by the defence attorney. Lumsden had 13 previous convictions.
