Teacher pleads guilty to bigamy

RASBERT TURNER, Spanish Town

ROHAN JOHNSON, A thirty-one-year-old school teacher convicted of rape will know his fate on December 16 after he pleaded guilty to bigamy when he appeared in the St. Catherine Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Johnson was arrested and charged for the offence after it was discovered that he had married both women seven years apart without divorcing his first wife.

The court learned that Johnson, while still married to an accountant in St. Catherine went to Moneague in St. Ann where he met and wed another lady in 1996. It is reported that in 2003 he was arrested and charged for rape in St. Mary and while there in prison both women would visit him and use the name Mrs. Johnson.

It is reported that the police became suspicious and he was charged with bigamy in October of that year after investigations revealed that he had wed twice without obtaining a divorce.

Mr. Johnson who has made several appearances in court always maintained his innocence until it was revealed he had destroyed the documents. However, the investigating officer secured a statement from the officiating pastor. As a result, Mr. Johnson changed his plea to guilty when he appeared before Justice Wesley James in the circuit court.
