'Ver' leads the way


Veronica Campbell, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Dwight Thomas - FILE

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 100 metres bronze medallist, Veronica Campbell, ended the 2005 Track & Field season as the best placed Jamaica on the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) overall rankings.

Campbell, fifth on the IAAF's overall list, was the only Jamaican in the top ten. She ended the year ranked at number two in both the 100m and 200m.

World Championships 100m hurdles bronze medallist Brigitte Foster-Hylton is the second best Jamaican on the overall ranking. She is ranked at 23.

Campbell is second on the short sprints list, which includes 50m, 55m, 60m, 100m runners with 1364 points, behind Frenchwoman Christine Arron (1376).

Sherone Simpson with 1297 points at sixth is the only other Jamaican in the 100m top 10.

In the women's 200m, World champion Allyson Felix of United States (1367) is at the top with Campbell second on 1331.

CAC Championships silver medallist Peta-Gaye Dowdie is the next best Jamaican. She ended just outside the top 10 at 13th with 1197 points.

World 100m record holder, Asafa Powell, ended the season as the fourth ranked 100m runner with 1333 points.

Powell who was dogged by injury for much of the season finished 2005 behind World Champion Justin Gatlin of the United States, Ghana's Aziz Zakari and his compatriot Dwight Thomas.

FRATER CRACKS THE TOP TEN

A third Jamaican, World Championships 100m silver medallist Michael Frater (1314), is listed at 10th.

In the men's 200m, Christopher Williams, who won silver at the 2001 World Championships and World Junior record holder Usain Bolt are ranked fifth and sixth with 1277 and 1266 points respectively.

Sprint hurdler Foster-Hylton ended the year in second with 1357 points.

World Championships silver medallist Delloreen Ennis-London finished third with 1339 points in this event while Lacena Golding-Clarke (1263) and Vonette Dixon (1262) finished 13th and 14th respectively. American Michelle Perry is the world's top-ranked 100m hurdler on 1380 points.

Brandon Simpson who ran his last race for Jamaica in August, ended as the joint second best 400m runner with Great Britain's Tim Benjamin this season with 1330 points.

Michael Blackwood is at eighth with 1281 points.

Maurice Wignall with 1310 points is ranked at eighth in the men's 110m hurdles. Dominique Arnold of United States with 1401 points tops the event ranking.

Kemel Thompson ended the 400m hurdles in seventh position with points 1306 points, while Ian Weakley is in 10th spot on 1253.

American Bershawn Jackson tops this field with 1408 points.

Kenia Sinclair, in her best year on the circuit, did enough to place 10th in the women's 800m. She has 1259 points. Cuba's Zulia Calatayud tops the field with 1359 points.

In the field events, world triple jump champion, Trecia Smith is ranked at number two. She tallied 1347 points, 20 less than Russian Tatyana Lebedeva (1367).

In the women's long jump, Elva Goulbourne finished 10th with 1182 points. Tatyana Kotova of Russia topped the event with 1325 points.

James Beckford with 1241 points ended the year in seventh position. Leading the way on 1394 points is American world champion Dwight Phillips.
