Man killed in two-vehicle collision

ONE MAN WAS killed and two vehicles left overturned after they collided at the intersection of Hagley Park and Waltham Park roads on Tuesday.

Shattered glass and a pool of blood were the remnants of the accident, which claimed the life of Kevin Blagrove, 30.

Witnesses say that about 5:10 a.m., Blagrove was transporting some workers in a white Toyota Hiace along Waltham Park Road, when, upon passing through the traffic lights, a silver Toyota Liteace travelling along Hagley Park Road collided with the Hiace bus. The collision impacted at the driver's door.

The Liteace reportedly flipped over while the Hiace bus, driven by Blagrove, reportedly spun twice and toppled to its side. Blagrove was said to be bleeding profusely from head injuries, and was pronounced dead at hospital.

Though police were unable to confirm who had broken the traffic light, a witness laid blame on the driver of the silver Liteace.

"The silver van was speeding and his light was on red but he broke it and slammed into the other van," recalled the witness.

The Liteace driver and a passenger sustained injuries, and are in hospital.

Blagrove has left behind a host of grieving family members, including his common-law wife, Melissa Brian, who is six months pregnant. His brother, Ferdinand, who was also in the vehicle, explained that nothing could have been done to avoid the accident.

"Him (Kevin) neva expect nobody fi come from da side cause dem light was on red, and di van jus fly outa nowhere...dem was going about 100 (kph)," recalled Mr. Blagrove.

Police suggest the driver of the Liteace may have been at fault. "We are still collecting witness information, but there is a formula we use to determine who is in err in these cases and so far it seems that the silver van was wrong, but that is not yet a surety," commented an officer from the Hunts Bay Police Traffic Department.
