Cop hit, motorist shot during patrol

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine

A MOTORIST AND A POLICE constable attached to the Spanish Town Police Station were hospitalised on Wednesday night from injuries received in an incident that started along the Young Street, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, and ended along the Bernard Lodge main road.

Reports reaching THE STAR are that at about 6:10 p.m., a group of policemen were on foot patrol in the Young Street area, when a motorist was signalled to stop. It is said that one of the officers stepped out in the road in his uniform and signalled to the car, which hit him. The driver of the car was shot in his leg by a member of the police party, but he managed to drive away.

The police party gave chase in a police vehicle and the motorist was caught along the Bernard Lodge main road, where the car was intercepted.

The injured driver and the policeman who was hit by the vehicle were both taken to hospital.

The names of both individual are being withheld. The Bureau of Special Investigations has been called in to conduct further investigation into the matter.
