WESTERN BUREAU:
WAYNE THOMPSON, 33, a farmer from Manchester, who tried to leave Jamaica using a forged document was fined $150,000 after pleading guilty to two counts of uttering a forged document.
The court heard that about 11:00 a.m. on December 17, Thompson checked in at the Sangster International airport to board an airplane to Miami. He presented a Jamaican passport which had a U.S visa.
CLOSE INSPECTION
Upon close inspection the officer suspected the documents were not legitimate. This was later confirmed by the passport office and the U.S Embassy.
Thompson initially told the court he did not know the passport was fake but said he paid $150,000 for the fake visa.
The court learnt that Thompson sold his car to buy the document.
"Since you have so much money to throw away to other people, perhaps you can throw some the government's way," RM Winsome Henry told Thompson before fining him $75,000 on each count.
