THE LEAD STORY in Wednesday's STAR spoke about the not guilty verdict entered by the jury, following the seven week trial of Senior Superintendent of Police Reneto Adams.
The controversial verdict has sparked several comments both positive and negative about the justice system. At least one human rights groups feel the verdict was unjust and a failure of their attempts to get justice for the victims of the Kraal shooting.
However, the story also highlighted Adams' intentions to return to active duty in the police force. In a strong victory speech following the verdict, he warned criminals to beware because he was coming to get them.
The decision to return Adams to the streets will largely depend on the Commissioner of Police and so until he makes a final determination many Jamaicans will wait anxiously.
Some Jamaicans have questioned whether the trial was handled fairly and whether justice was truly served by the jury's decision to return a not guilty verdict.
The different feelings about the case make one wonder what sort of situation will Adams be facing if he is sent back on the streets? Will he be able to engender the support from citizens, especially those who did not agree with the verdict. Will it mean that Jamaicans will feel safe with him on the streets or will it lead to more fear in many communities.
As the commissioner examines the factors and weighs the situation, one hopes he will consider all possible implications and make the decision that is better for all Jamaicans and the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
