Mom charged with abusing baby

A WOMAN WHO sought the public's help in finding the mother of a baby she claimed was found locked inside a closet at her home, was instead charged for abusing the child who police say belonged to her.

Simone Campbell claimed her friend left a day-old baby in her closet without telling her, but police investigations have revealed that Campbell is in fact the mother of the child.

Campbell, who is from a Kingston 5 address, has been charged with wounding with intent, ill treating a child, abandonment of a child and creating public mischief.

She appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where she was granted $50,000 bail with a surety. As a condition of her bail, Campbell was placed under curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

In her last appearance on December 16, Campbell's attorney's application for bail was denied. Her attorney claimed she was in a previous bad relationship in which she was beaten badly and she has some emotional baggage and memory loss.

MEDICAL OBSERVATION

Resident Magistrate Sarah Thompson-James had ordered Campbell to undergo medical observation. In Wednesday's sitting, the court was told that the observation was done but the report was not yet ready.

LEFT CHILD IN CLOSET

It is alleged that on November 28, at 12:30 a.m., Campbell went to the station and gave statements to the police that at 9:30 a.m. on November 27, a friend by the name of Sherene Brown, came to her house and left her baby in a closet in her room without her knowing.

The accused told the cops she left the house and returned later at 9:30 p.m. when the crying of the baby was heard. The accused stated that she found the baby inside the closet with blood on the neck and around the navel. She went in search of the friend who could not be found. Hence, she notified the police.

The baby was taken to the Bustamante Children's Hospital for treatment and attempts were made to find the mother including a public appeal which was aired in the media. However, investigations later revealed that the accused was the mother of the child who had a four centimetre long wound across the throat. The baby was a day-old. The accused was arrested and taken to the Victoria Jubilee Hospital where she was admitted for treatment.

She returns to court on January 6.
