Guyanese fined for drug trafficking

A GUYANESE NATIONAL, who was caught importing cocaine into the island, was fined $250,000 when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

In addition to this sum, she will have to serve 18 months imprisonment at hard labour.

Jennifer Hopkinson, 28, pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in and importing cocaine. She was apprehended at the Norman Manley International Airport on December 8 after she was stopped and searched.

Further checks were done and revealed that she had swallowed drugs. She was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where she expelled 36 pellets of cocaine.

If the fines are not paid, the sentences imposed will run concurrently but consecutively to the 18 months.
