'WI CAN WALK every wey', an article in yesterday's Gleaner, expressed the relief of the residents of South St. Andrew. According to the article the residents are grateful for the police whose presence have restored calm to the area.
This deliverance comes less than a week after THE STAR's lead story featured the war-torn communities of the constituency. Then, the residents were complaining about being politically abandoned, left to the protection of their own vigilante protection. Now they gladly express their gratitude for the work the police are doing.
However, less than five minutes away in Central Kingston, the residents of Charles Street are wondering, 'Who shot Jamar?' Here they claim they are not safe, either from gunmen or policemen. While the police claim that gunmen shot the 14-year-old, the residents are blaming the cops.
Where are we heading as a state? If we are to follow the cries of residents in some areas of Kingston and Spanish Town then we revert from democracy, the most ideal of all political institutions, to a police state, a state where the police is law, using whatever measures they deem necessary to maintain control.
But what is a suitable solution for the people of Central Kingston?
One thing that is sure, is that if we do not want a repeat of a year of 1,650 murders, we need a state that is under serious control.
