HAVING GROWN UP in Jamaica, over the last 40 years I have come to the conclusion that there are three types of Jamaican women that exist in our society.
These are
1. The idealist
2. The Virtuous
3. The Sketel
The idealist is probably the smallest group. These are the type of women that you would place on a pedestal and leave them there. They are the purest who strive for perfection and are very hard to please. Men only idolise them and worship them from afar. They are intellectual by nature, usually professional and definitely single. They set high standards for themselves and worst in others. The idealist usually occupy positions of power in this country, they can be down to earth when they want something done by us mere mortals, but usually find their heads back in the clouds when mission is accomplished. The idealist are usually of a brown hue or Jamaican white but is not restricted to this class as some women of the darker shade are in this category.
THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN
Then there is the virtuous woman. Probably the largest sector of Jamaican women. They are beautiful, hardworking, and self sacrificing lot. They are educated intellectual, when needs be and carry the largest percentage of our children, they are sometimes of dual personality in that they can be as low as the 'sketel', which I will later describe, and then can rise to the pattern of the idealist when needs be. They come in all shades and hues, and is the darling of Jamaican men. They will do anything to keep their children safe and free and will add equal vigour to support their men. The virtuous women are the backbone of the Jamaican Society.
THE SKETEL
Finally, the category, I least want to talk about but I must - the sketel. These women are identified by their looks and their mental state. The sketel usually wear the least clothing in Society. They expose breast, belly and buttocks for all to view.
They are usually of great figure, being mostly slim and trim and comes in all shades, from brown to dark. The easiest way to identify them, however, is when they open their mouths. They are usually vulgar and loud. They have a cass cass mentality.
Their aim is to get as much money and other value from different men. They do not do a nine to five job, but they do a 24-hour hustling of men in all sectors of the economy. The sketel fortunately, is limited to age and usually they graduate to one of the other categories as they get older and less pretty.
The Jamaican women are wide and diverse in colour, class and creed, but one thing they have in common is that they are pure Jamaican women and I must admit, I have been tempted by the sketel, hurt by Idealist, and loved by the virtuous woman.
