THE LEAD STORY in last Friday's STAR gave the refreshing tale of an 11-year-old boy who risked his life to save that of a four-month old infant trapped in a blazing inferno.
Such a story gives hope - hope to a nation torn by violence, a nation that has become notorious for all the wrong things. It reminds us too that not all our young men have been consumed by the monster that is crime and that even in the most 'depressed' communities, there are heroes.
This boy was not paid for his heroics, neither was he forced to go in after the child. It must have been his sense of humanity, his conscience, the voice deep inside that lets us know right from wrong. The voice which has seemingly been conveniently ignored by the gun toting, threat issuing 'bad men' that are attempting to run our society into the ground.
To say the infant's mother was grateful would be a dreadful understatement. But she is not the only one who should be thankful. We all should be. Little Javaugn Francis has shown, through his selfless deed, that there are still decent, caring people living in our society and he has brought positive attention to the humble Luke Lane community. He has shown us that all is not lost.
So, though THE STAR does not have the power to bestow upon Javaugn all the titles he deserves, we say big up and thank you and keep being you.
