Surprise victory by Cornwall College

AT THE END of section two, no one could have guessed that Cornwall College would have defeated Edwin Allen High 48-41 in their match in the 2006 TVJ Schools Challenge Quiz Competition on Thursday. At the end of section two, the scores read 36-35 in favour of Cornwall College.

Nevertheless, the St. James-based school overcame a hard fight from Edwin Allen High to advance to round one of the competition.

The match started with both teams showing some level of preparedness and it was no surprise that midway through section one, the scores were locked at 8-8. It was not until the latter part of section one that Cornwall established some advantage over their Clarendon-based opponents to end the section 15-12.

In section two, which is the speed section, Edwin Allen put up a spirited fight. In one instance they got nine points out of a possible 11 while their opponents could only manage six. Hence, at the end of section two, the gap closed to a single point and the scores read 36-35.

BUZZER SECTION

In the buzzer section, Cornwall College proved the better team as they accumulated an additional 12 points to end on 48. Their opponents could only muster up seven points. Consequently, the score was 48-41.

Fabian Mairs, captain of Cornwall College, said although they were victorious, at no point did they underestimate Edwin Allen.

"Initially, we were nervous as we didn't know what Edwin Allen were capable of or what they had in store. But, as the match progressed, we became more confident. We were nervous in the buzzer section but we overcame that as well," he said.

Edwin Allen's coach Marvin Cole said his team was a new one and their inexperience showed itself.

"They were slow on the buzzer and that is what cost us. This team is a new one so they are inexperienced and it showed up in the buzzer section," he said.

Teams: Cornwall College: Fabian Mairs(Captain), Leon Clarke, Claude Levy and Davion Cooper.

Edwin Allen:Jerome Shepherd(Captain), Damia Russell, Mikhail Graham and Lisa Briscoe.

Next match Meadowbrook plays Ewarton.
