Cops move into middle of warzone

A RECENT ARTICLE announced that the police high command will be moving its headquarters to downtown, Kingston.

The move has been viewed with mixed feelings by many Jamaicans. However the move is long overdue. It iis full time that the police high-command be placed in the middle of the battle, maybe then they can come up with a viable crime plan .

In 2005, more than 1600 Jamaicans were murdered. Many were children, the most defenceless and weak among us. We need to protect this valuable part of our future and the police have tried so many measures, many of which have not reaped any success.

Jamaicans are frustrated and are looking for a solution that works. In 2006, the people want crime measures that work. This should not be the usual more vehicles for the police and increasing the strength of the police force.

While these are important elements in the crime fight, we need much more than that. We need multifaceted programmes that target the social problems faced by those committing the crimes.

The programme needs to be long-term and not a quick fix. The relocation of the high command should place them at the heart of the issues and give them a first- hand view of the true crime problems. Hopefully, this will be enough to inspire a good plan that will save Jamaica from the criminals.
