IF THE DRIVER in a story in Monday's Gleaner headlined 'Driver held for manslaughter' is found guilty then the popular saying 'You can run but you can't hide' will ring true.
The driver of a truck has been accused of killing two young sisters on Saturday.
The story also stated that the driver fled the scene. The girls were killed along the McCooks Pen main road when the driver of a truck reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
Though nothing can replace the loss of a child, and surely not the loss of two, this news must have brought some satisfaction to the children's mother.
Hit-and-run accidents have become increasingly, popular in our society and too often the victims of these evil acts are innocent, helpless children. Some may argue that some drivers flee to save their own lives, especially when the accidents occur in troubled communities. But while this is acknowledged, nothing can justify such actions, especially when the guilty person has absolutely no intention of accepting responsibility.
If the person arrested in actually responsible for the incident is then this story brings some well needed attention to the issue of accountability and the fact that not many of us are quick to accept responsibility for our actions. Maybe it is something deeply embedded in our psyche, maybe we've been 'trained' to shy away from responsibility or maybe, just maybe, it stems from the fact that the society has become so lawless, no one feels they should take blame for what they've done. Whatever it is, it must change soon if we are to make any progress as a society.
