THE MINISTRY OF Health says the installation of several condom machines across the island has been reaping success.
Joy Chambers, project manager of Adolescent Reproductive Health at the ministry, says that the response has been good so far.
The machines have been installed in several locations across the island including hotels, the University of the West Indies (UWI), University of Technology (UTECH), Caymanas Track Limited and a number of shopping malls and centres.
Chambers says more than 30 machines were installed islandwide and an additional 50 machines are to be added soon.
The machines were initially installed by the National AIDS Committee of the Health Ministry more than a year ago as an innovative way of encouraging greater condom use.
A study between 1994-2003 found that condom demand was declining due to an increase in retail prices. The study indicated that all condom distributors, except Durex, experienced declining sales over the past two-three years.
Condoms can be had from the machines for $30 each. The machines are also expected to provide greater comfort for persons who are uncomfortable with purchasing condoms in stores or pharmacies.
