A PORTMORE DOCTOR who is accused of sexually assaulting his 14-year-old daughter on two occasions, was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 on Tuesday when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.
The doctor, whose age was not ascertained, is from Greater Portmore in the 'Sunshine City'.
When the accused appeared before Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar-Gayle, the investigating officer outlined to the court that at approximately 9:30 p.m. on January 7, he, along with his daughter and a stepdaughter, were watching television.
The court heard that when the stepdaughter fell asleep the accused allegedly fondled and had sex with his daughter.
The court further heard that the act was repeated on the January 11.
The court learnt that the child wrote a letter and explained her ordeal to the guidance counsellor of the school she attends. She was taken to the Greater Portmore Police Station's Center for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (formerly the rape unit).
After being examined by a doctor and following police investigations, the doctor was taken into police custody. He was later charged.
In applying for bail, the accused man's lawyer Althea Grant, told the court that the child in question has been behaving badly and was sent by her mother from another parish to stay with her father in Portmore. The attorney said despite this the child continued her bad behaviour, such as having boyfriends.
The RM told the lawyer that such behaviour is not an excuse for the doctor, being a responsible person and a professional, to have committed the act.
However, she granted bail to the accused on condition that he be fingerprinted and returns to court on March 7.
