Good start for Guyana

JUNIOR DOWIE - Guyana opener Sewnarine Chattergoon plays forward defensively during his innings of 75 against Jamaica at Chedwin Park yesterday. The left hander scored 75 to propel the visitors to 213 for four.

OPENER SEWNARINE CHAT-TERGOON hit a patient half-century as Guyana made a cautious start on the opening day of their Carib Beer Series match against Jamaica at Chedwin Park yesterday.

The 24-year old, left hander scored 75 to propel the visitors to 213 for four, after they won the toss and opted to bat in ideal conditions.

He, however, lacked support and only captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who ended the day unbeaten on 48, pushed on after getting a reasonable start.

Chattergoon added 38 for the opening stand with Krishna Arjune before the latter was prised out by Chris Gayle's off-spin for 13, after batting 92 minutes and facing 50 balls.

Narsingh Deonarine and Chattergoon steered Guyana to 51 for one at lunch but after the break, Deonarine went for 16 with the score on 86, after they had shared a 48-run stand.

Chattergoon added another 46 for the third wicket with West Indies vice captain Ramnaresh Sarwan who hit 30 in 62 minutes, from 50 balls including two fours and one six.

Guyana lost Sarwan to a catch by Gareth Breese off pacer Darren Powell prior to the tea interval, and Chanderpaul along with Chattergoon then steadied the Guyana innings with a partnership for 42 for the fourth wicket.

Chattergoon missed out on a deserved century when he was unfortunately run out after batting a shade over five hours and facing 237 balls, striking four fours and one six.

Chanderpaul, who was partnered by Travis Dowlin (eight not out) at the close, has so far batted 131 minutes and faced 104 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes.
