QUEEN'S HIGH TOPPED the qualifying tournament for second-place teams, as the Lasco/RBTT National Schools Chess Championships continued over the weekend at Montego Bay Community College (MBCC).
The teams were competing for the eight remaining places in the Round of 16.
Queen's finished on 10 points, followed by St. Jago on 7.5, Wolmer's Girls seven and Calabar on 6.5. Three teams, Heinz Simonitch, Mannings and Charlie Smith were all tied in fifth place on six points each, but Heinz were adjudged fifth after the tiebreak system was employed. They were followed by Mannings who took sixth and Charlie Smith seventh.
The last remaining place in the round of 16 was taken by Campion B who finished ahead of Charlemont High, after the tiebreak system was used to separate the teams who both finished on 5.5 points.
The Round of 16 which is scheduled to take place during this week is the start of the knockout phase of the tournament. This phase will involve the teams that advanced through the qualifiers and the teams that earned direct entry from the preliminary round.
The pairings for the round of 16 are as follows:
Glenmuir A vs Campion B, Queen's vs Glenmuir B, Campion A vs Heinz Simonitch, MBCC vs Calabar, Ardenne vs Charlie Smith, Camperdown vs St. Jago, Wolmer's Boys vs Mannings and Cornwall College vs Wolmer's Girls.
