The time period for filing a civil suit

A HEATED ARGUMENT between a couple four years ago ended with the woman losing two of the fingers on her left hand.

The woman said her boyfriend attacked her with a machete and she held up her hand to avoid being chopped in the head. The machete caught her on her left hand, severing two of the fingers.

"He was accusing me of two-timing him. I told him that he should not listen to gossip because what people were telling him was not true. He just would not listen to me and both of us had a terrible quarrel.

FOUGHT BACK

"We told each other things that were not pleasant. He started to hit me during the quarrel and I fought back. I was getting the better of the fight at the time when he ran for a machete, and began chopping at me. I held up my hand to avoid being chopped in the head when two of my fingers on the left hand got chopped off.

"The case went to court and he was convicted of wounding me. He spent nine months in prison and was not working for almost two years after he came from prison. One of his relatives gave him a minibus and he is now running the bus from one parish to another.

"I have suffered severe pain and discomfort because of the loss of my fingers. Is it possible that I could sue him for what he did to me despite the fact he served a sentence?"

The fact that he was convicted and sent to prison does not prevent you from filing a civil suit against him. You have six years from the time of the incident to file the suit. Therefore, if six years have passed, you can not sue him. You should consult a lawyer immediately so that the suit can be filed as soon as possible.
