Woman accused of drug trafficking loses bail bid

BY TASHIEKA MAIR, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE BAIL APPLICATION for a 45-year-old female drug accused, whom Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry assessed as a possible flight risk, was turned down in the Montego Bay RM Court recently.

Elet Fray of Green Island in Hanover was ordered to stay behind bars until February 21 when her possession of, dealing in and attempting to export ganja case will be mentioned.

Defence attorney Natalie Messado told the court that her client had no idea the drugs were in her suitcase. She also pleaded to RM Winsome Henry to grant her client bail to take care of her two-year-old daughter, who is said to be very ill.

However, RM Henry said arrangements could be made for the persons who are presently taking care of her sick child to continue doing so until the matter is resolved.

The allegations are that on January 30, Fray checked in to board an Air Jamaica flight to the Bahamas. The officer who was checking luggage made an observation of her suitcase and she was summoned.

It is said that Fray identified the piece of luggage as hers and it was searched in her presence. Six packages of compressed ganja weighing 7.5 pounds were found in a secret compartment.
