High praise for Lara

Brian Lara

port of spain, trinidad (cmc)

BATTING GENIUS BRIAN Lara has come in for high praise from several of Trinidad and Tobago's cricket officials for his part in the country's recent Carib Beer Series success.

The 36-year old Lara was singled out by most of the speakers at a lavish home coming reception at the Piarco International Airport yesterday , following the victory against Barbados on Sunday at the Carlton Cricket Ground, which gave the local team its first four-day regional title in 21 years.

"I want to congratulate Brian (Lara) on his world record achievement and to thank him for his contribution to T&T's success, not only his runs, but his sheer presence which lifts team-mates and intimidates opponents, and by his leadership qualities, he also provides inspiration to his teammates and support for his captain," Deryck Murray, the T&T Cricket Board president, said.

"To the others, we need to go back to club cricket and help to raise the standards there, so that you are physically and mentally prepared for the later challenges, but also to the long-term benefit of T&T cricket."

Sports Minister Boynes said that Lara's presence among the younger players, had given them the fillip to perform their best at the highest level.

"He is a great team motivator and leader. He answered the call for T&T when it was most needed," Boynes said.

Boynes told the distinguished gathering that this achievement augured well for the entire sporting fraternity and was symbolic of the unifying force that sport represented.

"This win raises the sporting banner of T&T even higher at a time when our nation seeks inspiration," Boynes remarked.

Team manager Omar Khan echoed similar sentiments and alluded to the motivational lecture given by Lara on the team's arrival in Barbados.

"Lara told the guys that we have come so far for this championship and we must not let it slip," Khan revealed.

"He urged the players to remain focused as we have the ability to beat Barbados. So said, so done. Lara is really tremendous." T&T will receive the Carib Cup just before the start of the Carib International Shield semi-final in April.
