A SECURITY GUARD employed to the Guardsman Group was on Tuesday sentenced to two years imprisonment at hard labour, for driving away a car with cash and a gun and a bulletproof vest, when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
Bobby Munroe, 39, was sentenced after pleading guilty to the charge of larceny as a servant. Munroe was arrested and charged on December 2.
The court was told that on December 1, Munroe and two other security guards left the Guardsman compound on South Camp Road to collect money at various points. They stopped at a bank on Duke Street and Munroe's colleagues went into the bank leaving him in the vehicle. Court files indicate that when the guards returned, neither Munroe nor the vehicle was seen. The vehicle was said to contain £15,000 ($1.5 million) and a quantity of Japanese yen and Barbadian dollars. In addition, the company's bulletproof vest and firearm were missing.
Munroe was caught in Linstead the next day and £1,500, the gun, the bulletproof vest and the rest of the money were recovered.
When the matter was heard before RM Martin Gayle, Munroe's attorney asked the court for leniency as the accused had been in lock-up for almost three months. He asked that the court impose a suspended sentence on him since he pleaded guilty and was sorry the incident had taken place.
But, in handing down the sentence, R.M. Gayle said that Munroe was placed in a position of trust and had violated it. He said the sentence was lenient since the guilty plea and the time spent in custody had been taken into consideration.
