Well-deserved victory by Bridgeport High

BRIDGEPORT HIGH WALKED away with a well-deserved victory over Queen's High School in the TVJ School Challenge Quiz Competition on Thursday.

The Portmore-based school won 32-21 to advance to the next round.

From the start of the match, it was evident that it would be close and unpredictable as both teams were performing well. By the end of the first segment, Queen's School held a marginal lead with nine points, against Bridgeport High's seven.

Bridgeport soon took command of the match in the speed segment, and by the end of their second minute, they had 20 points, to Queen's 13 points.

With the fervent effort of team members, Felicia Francis and Tamika Wright (captain), Queen's managed a last-minute comeback, and at the segment's end, they were one point behind Bridgeport's 24 points.

INEXPERIENCE

But the inexperience of Queen's School soon became evident, as they lost 8 points in the next segment for four incorrect responses. Bridgeport High would not falter, however, and soon had a commanding lead.

At the signal of the match's closure, Bridgeport had 32 points, to Queen's 21 points.

Citing their effort as fair, Bridgeport High revealed that they were expecting a better performance. The coach was in consensus with her team's views.

"I think they did fairly well, as it was a commendable effort, but they need to focus on what they were trained on, and execute them in their matches with confidence," said Felicia Grey, Bridgeport High's team coach. Although they lost the match, the enthusiastic girls of Queen's School hardly appeared to be disappointed.

"It was a well played match from both teams ... It's all our (members) first time in the competition and with this experience, we'll be back even better next year", said Shanique Ellington.

The team coach attributed the team's loss to their getting nervous and making too many errors.

"They got a little nervous but performed quite well for their first time in the competition ... their amount of errors and lack of speed was their ultimate downfall," said Queen's School team coach, Thaddeus Davis.
