A TRIAL DATE will be set for evidence to be heard in the case against a 69-year-old farmer charged with possession, dealing in and taking steps to export 34 pounds of ganja last December.
The case against the accused, Benjamin Gordon of Bethel Town in Westmoreland, will be mentioned next Tuesday (Feb. 28) when it is expected that defence attorney Earnest Smith, who was absent on Tuesday when the case was called, will be available to set a trial date.
Gordon, who is on $250,000 bail, had his bail extended and is still bound to the condition of reporting to the Bethel Town Police Station, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Allegations are that about 4:15 p.m. on November 12, Gordon went to the Sangster International Airport, where he was to board an Air Jamaica flight to London.
He was called into the luggage chute in relation to a suitcase, which had his name on it but he denied owning it.
It is said that a smaller suitcase that he had in his possession was then searched and a key was used to open the suitcase. It was searched and found to contain the packaged ganja.
