Man arrested after posing as sibling
PRETENDING TO BE someone else can be a costly thing. And, Keona Pryce found that out on Friday when he was fined $20,000 for pretending to be his brother.
Pryce pleaded guilty to false declaration when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Allegations are that police visited 15 Tarrant Drive, St. Andrew to execute a distress warrant bearing the name Kenyatta Pryce to collect $90,000 issued by the Kingston Family Court.
DISTRESS WARRANT
Whilst at the premises the police identified himself to a male standing in the yard and told him he was there to see Kenyatta Pryce for whom a distress warrant had been issued.
The male identified himself as Kenyatta Pryce and asked the officer to explain why he was there. The officer explained that he was there to collect the $90,000.
The officer then read the warrant to him and asked him if he had a child by the name of Tijoune and the accused allegedly said yes.
He allegedly told the officer that he did not have the money because he just got a job at the animal pound at Ambrook Lane and as soon as he got the money he would pay it.
The officer left the address and went to the Justice of the Peace with the warrant, endorsed it and signed it.
The officer then returned to the Kingston Family Court with the warrant where he applied for an arrest warrant for Kenyatta Pryce.
On Wednesday March 1, at 10:30 a.m., the officer went with the arrest warrant to the same address where he saw the accused .
He called to him by name and he responded and the officer then arrested him. He was taken to the Gun Court remand centre and placed in custody.
Whilst at the Gun Court remand centre a man approached the officer and told him that he had the wrong man.
HELPING OUT
The man said he was the father of the defendant and his name is not Kenyatta Pryce. He supplied the officer with a Jamaican passport and driver's licence which had the accused photo. The officer then arrested and charged defendant Keona Pryce for the offence of false declaration.
When Pryce appeared before the court on Friday, he was fined $20,000 or three months. Pryce claimed he did not know that his brother was wanted for something serious and he was just helping him out.
