WHILE THE Registrar General Department's parent office in Twickenham Park, Spanish Town, is regarded by many as a place to avoid unless absolutely necessary, the organisation's Portland office has been receiving positive reviews.
Persons who have visited the Portland office, have expressed pleasure at the quality and efficiency of the service provided and are disappointed that the head office does not hold similar appeal.
The office celebrated its first anniversary on January 24 and in just a year, has made a lasting impression on those who have visited. Located on West Street, Port Antonio, the office provides all the services that are offered at the head office. They handle requests for birth, marriage and death certificates, conduct weddings and also offer a seven to 10-day express service.
One person who visited the office in January told THE STAR that she was pleasantly surprised at the service she received. "They were very efficient and not as crowded as the Spanish Town office. They actually had seats, I didn't have to stand and wait and I was out of there in less than 20 minutes." She was also impressed with how quickly her documents were delivered. "I paid $750 for two copies of my birth certificate and within two weeks, it was delivered to my house."
A representative from the office told THE STAR that "the office is greatly appreciated in the region and the people are happy and enthusiastic about the fact that they don't have to travel to Kingston." He added that the opening of the office was part of the plan to decentralise the organisation by providing regional offices. The office serves the parishes of Portland and St. Thomas, as well as some sections of St. Mary.
