'Unlucky' songwriter remanded in custody

BY RASBERT TURNER, Star Writer

SPANISH TOWN

A 23-YEAR-old man who the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court was told is the author of the hit song 'Lucky You' done by singer Nanko, was remanded in custody for psychiatric evaluation on a charge of malicious destruction of property after his lawyer told the court he suffers from a bipolar disorder.

He is Junior Lawrence of Winters Pen in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

DISPUTE WITH GRANDMA

Investigating officer, Constable Howard Hughes of the Spanish Town police, told the court that about 8:00 p.m. on February 28, Lawrence went home and had a dispute with his grandmother. The court heard that the accused pulled off the door to her room, threw several pieces of furniture including a fridge, sofa and stove outside, and started to behave in an aggressive manner. The police were called and the songwriter arrested and charged.

When he appeared before Resident Magistrate Nicole Simmonds on Tuesday, Lawrence's lawyer, Antoinette Haughton-Cardenas, told the court that her client is very talented. She claimed that he wrote the Lucky You song and needs all the support he can get to continue writing songs. She asked RM Simmonds to assist her client by granting bail. The RM, however, told her that this could not be done as there need to be further checks into Lawrence's condition.

The lawyer told her that her client's condition can only be evaluated by the Bellevue Hospital where he has been a patient for some time.

The RM remanded Lawrence until April 19 for the report to be completed and taken to court. Before Lawrence left the dock, he asked for time to speak and was allowed: "Your Honour please, I cannot sleep well in the cell, I cannot do anything. At home I have my posturepedic where I am free to do anything including have sex," he pleaded.

The RM was steadfast in her decision and remanded Lawrence until the psychiatric evaluation is done.
