RENFORD 'RUM ROY' Perry, son of reggae artiste Lee 'Scratch' Perry was sentenced to one day community service for breaking a pane of glass at the Hilton hotel while stoning a security officer there.,
Perry pleaded guilty in the Corporate Area RM Court to malicious destruction of property.
The court heard that Perry broke the glass while stoning a security officer who was chasing him from the premises for harassing customers. However, Perry claimed he did not break the glass. "It neva break di glass it just mek a hole inna it," he said.
CHASED FROM AREA
Allegations are about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday March 8, the guard and Perry had a disagreement after Perry was chased from the area for harassing customers at Illados Ice Cream Parlour. Perry allegedly went across to Trinidad Terrace, started cursing and threw stones and bottles.
One of the bottles hit a pane of glass in the show window of Madison Collection, which is at the hotel, shattering it in several places.
NO MONEY
A report was made to the New Kingston police post and the accused was arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property. When he appeared in court, police indicated that Perry had no money to replace the glass and so Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle should consider not fining him. As a result RM Gayle sentenced him to one day community service which he started as soon as he was taken from the court room. This ended at 5:00 p.m. that afternoon.
