WINSTON DENTON LEARNT the hard way that he could not run from the law when he tried to pass off the blame for his cocaine on his friend. In the end he seemed to have learned that honesty was the best policy.
Cavian Hamilton, 21 of John's Lane, was initially charged with possession of cocaine but had the charges with-drawn when he appeared, after Denton, the true owner of the stall, accepted the liability when he came before the court for other offences.
"Your Honour, is not my cocaine. The police search the stall and dem seh anything dem find belong to me. Mi tell dem seh a nuh my stall, a Winston own and dem still lock mi up," he told the court.
"Mr. Denton, is your cocaine?" Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle asked the accused whose other cases at the court had just been dealt with.
"Yes, Your Honour, is my cocaine," Denton confirmed
Denton, who had been fined on previous offences, was given an additional fine after admitting his liability.
Allegations are that on Friday, March 10, the police were on patrol in the Kingston Central area when they stopped and searched a stall along John's Lane. There they found a Crazy Glue container with 11 pieces of crack cocaine. At the time of the discovery, Hamilton was selling at the stall and was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine.
When the officers were returning to the Central Police Station with Hamilton, they saw Denton, 22, from John's Lane, riding a bicycle and acting suspiciously. He was stopped and searched and a knife and a small quantity of ganja were found in his possession.
At the station, Denton reportedly told police that the cocaine belonged to Hamilton and he had sent him to buy ganja.
However, when they appeared in court, Denton changed his story and so was charged and fined for the offences. He was fined $20,000 or six months imprisonment at hard labour for possession of cocaine, $500 or 10 days for offensive weapon possession and $200 or 10 days for possession of ganja.
