Morning end to 'Spring Bling'

BY MEL COOKE, Freelance Writer

D'Angel 'backs it up' on her fiancée Beenie Man at Dancehall Jam Jam held in Clarendon recently. The couple also appeared on Spring Bling' over the weekend. - NATHANIEL STEWART

AT NEARLY 5:45 A.M. on Saturday, after his fiancée D'Angel had backed up on him, bent over and wiggled away as they did One Man You Got and the audience howled, Beenie Man made an unwelcome announcement.

"De police waan lock it off, but a no my fault," he said, saying later that "de whole a we come ya fi work, but de man dem bum rush de ting an disrespec' de ting."

He was the start of the second wave of 'mass performers', Bounty Killer leading out the first some time earlier with Eagle and The Hawk, the stage getting filled with Movado, Schoolboy, Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Mr. Lex, Bling Dawg, Wayne Marshall, Hollow Point, Aidonia and Capleton.

Still, after Beenie's comment, 'Spring Bling', held at the Constant Spring football field, Constant Spring Road, went on a bit longer, Kip Rich storming on with Liquor, a huge forward coming from the substantial audience as Assassin chanted "a no me mek yu catty waan stray" and Merciless squeezing Ol Gallis on a rhythm. As Kip Rich deejayed "a de cell phone a gi weh bad man" in the early morning, a truck with bundles of cane and a gaggle of persons heading to market got caught up in the traffic outside the football field.

HOWLING LATE

With the early audience howling with laughter well on the downside of midnight at a leaping, squealing Imaru, whose red turban flapped loose as he leapt and deejayed enthusiastically, if not effectively, 'Spring Bling' was always going to be very late. And slightly chaotic, as it turned out.

All the artistes performed to recorded tracks and Bescenta was a hit with Mama Never Told Me, Esau got nothing from the audience and MC Nuffy, who hosted most of the show, said "did come een like 'Champion In Action'. Yu can tun yu back an' sey fling." The slew of lesser know names continued, even as the audience grew, Leaf of Life, Ninja Ford and Dadda performing before the audience welcomed the 'Fire Child' Fantan Mojah warmly. They agreed with Black Lion to "push lady push", Angie Angel joining him on stage and deejaying at length to a cool reception.

BAD BOY ROMEO

There was not even a wisp of applause for Smoke until he sang of "bad boy Romeo" and KB changed Uptown Top Ranking to a graphic take against sex with children, before the concert went back to recorded music with Sky Juice. Starting with Can't Even Walk and then going for We Are The World, Sky Juice ripped the venue apart, saying after The Girl Is Mine "no mix me. Class is class."

At minutes after 3:00 a.m. boy dancer Rahim, the K-Queens ("we no lickie back, a CeCile ting dat"), a substandard Chiney Ting, Flex, Nuclear and Shane-O, who flashed lightning, continued the performances on a very long line-up. Barkey and Wickerman's Virgin Story delighted the now substantial audience, but Don Mafia escaped the stage just as the handclaps started for him to leave from a section of the audience.

Many sipped happily for Fabi Dolly's Peanut Punch, Hit List asked "please stop the killing" and when Ras Ghandi crooned "we no want no more bloodshed", the grounds lit up. Bascom X sang of his call and Natural Black received a very strong reception with Far From Reality, sustaining it with It Nice and Songs With Feeling. The sound of Gyptian's voice ignited the audience, Is There a Place moving them further.

Fire Links took a turn with a few Movado songs from the turntables and there was some confusion when Razz and Biggy tried to take a turn as well, eventually doing so before Bounty Killer stepped onto the stage.

The mass of deejays on stage left QQ to chant of Poverty, the child artiste calling on Beenie Man as instructed.
