Flipping away the future

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Recently, the popular people's paper, THE STAR, posted a headline stating 'Flip phone trap' - men using fancy device to lure girls'. Now upon reading this article I was made aware of what was happening in this our country.

The article stated that a group of men promised some teenage girls a flip phone and money, $28,000 to be exact, if they complied to accompany them to a house in Yallahs. Upon agreeing who knows what could have happened to them if neighbours had not reported these suspicious men.

It has been alleged that these men had raped some of the girls who they lured to their house. Jamaica, our teenage girls are in danger, and the blame goes straight back to the parents or guardians in our society.

They should be making sure to instill good morals and values in our children, especially our girls. I can recall when I was much younger my parents always reminded us (me and my two other sisters) not to accept things from strangers, not to be 'red-eye' and not to be 'licky-licky'. I know there are many more like me and my sisters, who were taught this lesson at an early age.

Let me guess these girls wanted to be amongst the rich and famous, as everyone has a flip phone nowadays.

As a result they agreed to accompany these guys just to get a flip phone and money. In Jamaican terms, unnu too licky licky! and I blame it somewhat on the parents!

Now despite the fact that these girls wilfully submitted themselves and fell for the trap to get a mere flip phone and money, that still did not give these men the right to take advantage of these girls and they should be punished severely. I repeat you guys had no right!

Now to you young girls out there, what is in a flip phone for you to risk your life over? Is a flip phone worth your life? Not everything is about material things, don't be so vain.

You should strive to get a good education and become independent, don't be dependent on these men who swear that they love you and get you the world if you let off a 'ting'. No, don't belittle yourselves and become cheap!

Stand up for your rights, believe in yourself and allow no man to buy you off with anything, a flip phone at that. What if you ended up pregnant?

There goes your future, all for a mere flip phone? Please teenage girls in Jamaica, as a teenager myself, I am imploring you not to be so 'licky-licky' and quick to accept these material gifts/things men promise you. Think about the consequences.

Parents instill proper morals and values in our children especially the girls. Please I'm begging, let us put a stop to this licky-licky mentality!

I am, etc,

EUQINOY
