COACH OF THE Wolmer's Girls Schools' Challenge Quiz team, Paul Thomas, says the team's main objective was to advance to the quarter finals. They managed to achieve just this, by outscoring Knox College, 24-13 in their third round face-off yesterday.
The first segment of the match was very dull, with both teams struggling to answer correctly. From the outset of the match, the Wolmer's team seemed to be more focused than their opponents and this carried through into the rest of the match. Knox managed to provide some laughs when they identified singer Peter Lloyd as Natty Dread. This segment ended with Wolmers on 5, after losing a point for an answer that was mistakenly accepted and Knox on 3, afetr gaining a point for a theatre question that was first ruled unacceptable by the judges.
In the second segment, both teams tried to collect as many points as they could. Knox performed poorly in their first two minutes but made a commendable comeback in the final minute, scoring 7 points. Wolmers, on the other hand, did fairly well in their first and last minutes but only managed to get three points in their second minute. At the end of this segment, Wolmers were on 18 points and Knox trailed on 15.
Though both teams were entering the final round with an equal chance, this section was far from exciting. Knox College buzzed in only once, allowing Wolmer's Girls to comfortably and easily expand their lead and eventually walk away victorious.
The Knox team was obviously disappointed and their coach, Andre Douglas, expressed his belief that the team played poorly. "This year it was a younger team. All of them were playing for the first time. I think they played poorly today. They missed some simple questions as they weren't as focused as I'd hoped. The other team was more composed."
